Becoming a Morning Workout Person

Ugh, mornings. Why do they have to hurt so much?! I have never been a morning person - ask my mom. When I was a kid, I could sleep like a champ until 11:00 or noon. As an adult, I was saddened to learn that work and life actually happens much earlier than noon. Meetings at 7:00 a.m. - WHAT?! Who does that?

I have been fortunate to work for employers who provide some flexibility for my night owl personality. I would sleep in as long as possible - 7:30 or even 8:00 with the goal of making it in to the office by 9:00 or 9:30 a.m. and then working until 6:00 or 6:30. Not everyone has this luxury and I did not take it for granted for one moment.

My Ah-Ha Moment

One day, after complaining for two years that I never had time to work out because I was just too busy, I made a big discovery. I actually DID have time to work out. I was just sleeping through it! Working out at night was my preference but often professional events, home projects, or social time with friends would mean scratching a visit to the gym. Mornings, on the other hand, had no conflicts. I also realized that it didn't matter what time I woke up - 6:00 or 8:00, rolling out of bed was never going to be easy. So why not suck it up and get to the gym to create a healthier me?

Now, I don't want you to think I just flipped a switch and everything was roses. It was not. In fact, I had to enlist the help of a couple great friends to suffer mornings at the gym with me so I wasn't miserable alone (misery loves company, after all). The first day was awful. Not only was it 6:00 a.m., it was a MONDAY. Double whammy. But, I knew I had people counting on me to show up. So, out of bed I went.

The next day was no easier but after a couple weeks of repeating the process every morning Monday through Saturday, I started to notice it wasn't SO bad. The alarm would go off and I would just get up and get going.

Preparation is Key

One of my keys to success was preparation the night before. I pack my lunch, get my Shakeology shake ready for an on-the-go breakfast, pack my gym bag with work clothes for the next day, and set out what I'm going to wear to the gym - clothes, watch, heart rate monitor, shoes, etc. That way, I have nothing to think about other than getting out the door.

Make the Switch

Morning workouts are now a habit for me. After about two months of going through the same routine, I noticed feeling more energized, upbeat, and happy. Maybe it's the sunrise I never knew existed. Maybe it's the birds chirping. Maybe it's the fact that a regular workout routine has transformed by body and overall health.

If you've found yourself complaining that you never have time to work out, I highly recommend that you consider what can be done in the mornings. Maybe it means being at the gym at 6:00, maybe 5:30. Get to bed earlier and wake up earlier. It can be done and your body will thank you, I promise. Try it out for 2 months and if you're not 100% satisfied, you can have your pillow back!
